Volunteering

Clearing the towpath

The Barnes towpath and Beverley Brook can sometimes be used as a dumping ground by less scrupulous individuals. As well as spoiling the natural beauty of these places, littering can also cause hazards to local wildlife. There is a fantastic charity called Thames 21 which regularly organises clean ups of all London's waterways and volunteering to join a local cleaning squad can be a surprisingly fun way to spend a day. Friends of Barnes Common

Membership is open to all: your involvement will help us to preserve the Common for future generations to enjoy as we do.

Helping the elderly - FisH

The Barnes Green Centre in Church Road, just next to the pond, provides fantastic facilities for the elderly both from Age Concern and also from FiSH a local voluntary group.

FiSH (Friendship, independence, Support, Help) provides help and support in the community, offering assistance with practical tasks and offering friendship to anyone in need in Barnes, Mortlake and East Sheen. FiSH also provides door-to-door transport for hospital and GP visits, collecting prescriptions and weekly shopping trip as well as helping out with odd jobs around the house and garden.

To learn more about FiSH and how you can get involved as a volunteer, take a look at our short film It's a Lifeline...
