Part of the Barnes Music Festival.
Celebrated musician Graham Johnson gives a Lecture Recital on Holst’s connections with exoticism, illustrated by performances of Holst pieces by international performers Daniel Turner, Sioned Gwen Davies and Brandon Velarde. Throughout his life Holst had a great interest in the exotic, and this had a direct affect on his composing.
In 1895 Holst learnt Sanskrit so that he would be able to provide his own translations of Hindu Scripture which he wanted to set to music, and again in 1917 he learnt Greek for his composition ‘The Hymn of Jesus’. It was not just his music, however, that was affected by this love of the exotic. Holst was not a conventionally religious man, believing in the doctrines of Dharma and reincarnation, as well as having an interest in astrology.
